I had the chance to talk with … Siemens (the manufacturer) and Siemens PLM (their PLM software group) last week as a participant in an PLM industry analysts meeting. The meeting was full of interesting updates on their PLM products, but one thing that really struck me was Siemens talking about Siemens. As many people know, Siemens was a big user of Siemens PLM solutions prior to acquiring them (back when they were known as UGS). When Siemens acquired UGS I saw some real promise and some real potential problems, it was interesting to get an update and a new perspective.

Invention Machine Boosts “Every Day” Innovation Capabilities
I had the chance to talk with … Jim Todhunter and the team at Invention Machine about the new product release they announced today. There are lot of things that I like in the release designed to help further Invention Machine’s ability to operationalize innovation. But what really struck me was the goal of this release to improve “Every Day Innovation” in a procedural, sustainable way.
Going One-to-One with QLM-plus Vendor MasterControl
I had the chance to talk with … a couple of vendors this year about Quality Lifecycle Management, or QLM. I posted earlier about What I Learned: Expanding PLM’s Pervue – Quality and Risk Management and promised to follow up with some more detail on the vendors. Here are my thoughts on my conversations with MasterControl. Before I get started, it’s important to state up front that MasterControl is not a pureplay QLM suppplier, but a broader solutions company that has strong capabilities in document management coupled with a history of helping companies in regulated industries. More on that later.
Going One-to-One with Quality Lifecycle Management Vendor Dyadem
I had the chance to talk with … a couple of vendors this year about Quality Lifecycle Management, or QLM. I posted earlier about What I Learned: Expanding PLM’s Pervue – Quality and Risk Management and promised to follow up with some more detail on the vendors. Here are my thoughts on my conversations with Dyadem. One early caveat is that Dyadem – while they support the QLM approach to quality – refers to themselves as a “Quality Risk Management” solution provider as opposed to QLM.
Planview has Big Plans for PPM (and is bringing friends)
I had the chance to talk with … the team at Planview earlier this month about their plans for the product portfolio management (PPM) market. Although they have historically focused on ITPM (information technology portfolio management), I was encouraged by what I heard from the Planview team. I am very cautious when I hear manufacturers consider historically IT-focused portfolio management solutions for product development. Despite the fact that on the surface PPM and ITPM needs seem similar, there are some very fundamental differences. Planview, however, deserves a second look.
